On December 2006, we are having a gardeneering project as preparation to recepting new members and advancing the 2007 Centenary, the celebration 100 years of scouting milestones. Other than this, the purpose of this project also allow the juniors who conduct this project to gain their experience and knowledge about gardening.
We held a meeting on the 2nd December 2006 with scoutmaster, Sir Alex Tan Wei Yen to propose the discussion about gardening procedures. We then brain-storming to design the garden, selective plants and flowers.
The next day, we went to flower and plants bargain centre nearby Sungai Buloh Hospital to bought some floor matt grass. Then we also bought some selected herbal plants and flowers. We began to worrying about the budget given by board of committee as the totalled budget given was RM 150 and we have already spent RM 65.80 on the particular day.
The gardeneering project was held for about 8 days as planned, which is on 11th, 13th, 16th, 18th, 20th, 23rd, 28th and 29th December 2006.
Summaries of the schedules:
11th December, 2006 Overture! The attendance is not very satisfying as only 2 senior scouts present to workout. Therefore only couple of tasks can be done and yet they manage to hoe up some weeds. During this day we also having the trouble to determine amount of areas and assisted by Sir Alex Tan to mark-ups the plots.
13th December, 2006 The attendance has improved by adding another extra of 2 seniors to workout the project. We started at 7.30am and ended around 12.00pm. It is hard to clear the weeds as this area was previously left for decades without flower planting.
16th December, 2006 It was a mousture-raining day and yet the project manage to carry on. Due to the wheather condition, the gardening workouts has been delay to 8.13am to began. Totalled 5 seniors, 8 patrol leaders and few juniors attended to carry out the duty. They still hoe up the remaining areas of weeds and grass.
18th December, 2006 On this particular day, we had finally finished the weeds hoeing with the help of another extra 3 seniors. 5 patrol leaders and 3 juniors has attended as well. We decided to began the pioneering project as one of the planned decoration materials.
20th December, 2006 Four seniors, 5 patrol leaders had attended and we started about 7.30am. We wiring up the bridge gadget, unfortunately during the process it was not enough rope to carry out remaining knots tying. We proceed this duty to the next gardening day.
23rd December, 2006 The gardening begins at 7.30am and lasting about 1.45pm. Today is the most "semangat" day for us as we have finished planting all the flowers and complete pioneering in the day with more help from another 2 seniors, 2 patrol leaders and one junior scout.
28th December, 2006 We planted the floor-matt grass starting at about 7.30am untill 11.30am. There were only 1 senior and a patrol leader present.
29th December, 2006 Finale! Our project's has come to an end. We rolling at 7.30am, as usual ended up at 12.00pm noon. Only 1 senior and patrol leader presence to complete the fence gate of the garden.
During our workout on this auspicious duty, we are facing several problems like out of budget for the expenses, the matter of efficient arrangement, before-and-after caring of flowers and plants, lack of transportation and etc.
We are proud that even though there are problems insisted, we learn to make the problem-solving with guidance from committee members and scoutmasters. There's a word to describe as "Learning by doing, Gaining by Giving, and... Get the Job Done! Gardening also educating us to appreciate the natural being, exercise the duty of scout to service, besides gaining the knowledge of plants and its beneficial role to environment and human.
Having fun and laughtr is another priceless experience we have acquired from. Even though we are having lots of uncooperative issues, personal attitude and aptitude problems, and variety points of view for each and everyone of us. Some of us even carrying home earthworms from the sites. It is hard to be 100% perfect for the achievement as we learn to offer our very best before complaining the rest! As long as we exercise the passion for scouting and commitment to get the job done, as soon as possible.
Last but not least, I would like to acknowledge all the scouts and their parents who also contributing by transporting their children to school to fulfill their duties. I would like to express my gratitude to our most sincere and deepest appreciation to all who has assisted us whether directly or indirectly in the process of making the troop's gardening a great success. I would like thanks also our respective scoutmaster, Sir Alex Tan Wei Yen who always supporting and guiding us on the way of learning and acquiring some knowledge from his experience. I have kept my promise to finish this garden and hope that we, 37th Gombak Eagle Scout Troop continue to soaring high by fulfill the motto of "Be Prepared for Life!"
